Afghan Women’s Rights Watch (AWRW) was founded by Afghan doctors, architects, journalists, activists, and academics to highlight the severe human rights violations faced by women under Taliban rule. One of its founders, MD. Zakira Hekmat, stated that August 15 marks a dark day when women across Afghanistan were stripped of their right to education, work, freedom, and a life with dignity. She emphasized that this date is not only a symbol of systematic oppression but also of the international community’s failure to protect basic human rights. MD. Hekmat underlined that Afghan women, despite all restrictions, will never give up their struggle for freedom and equality.
In this context, AWRW members and volunteers gathered to organize an awareness event in defense of Afghan women’s rights. Participants carried banners with slogans in Persian, Turkish, and English. Their messages stressed the need to protect women’s fundamental rights, from the right to education to the freedom to work, and called on national and international communities to stand in solidarity.
The event also featured an exhibition of artworks created by some of the members.
